It's easy to become cynical when life never goes your way.

Cole Reid has been a social recluse since he was 15, when he was outed by his high school baseball team. Since then, his obsessive-compulsive behavior and sarcastic nature have driven away most of the population, and everyone else hates him because he's gay. As he sees it, he's bound to repulse any prospective friends, let alone boyfriends, so why bother?

By the time Cole enters college, he's become an anal-retentive loner - but it's not a problem until his roommate graduates and the housing department assigns Ellis Montgomery to move in with Cole. Ellis is messy, gorgeous, straight, and worst of all, a jock!

During a school year filled with frat buddies, camping expeditions, and meddling parents, Cole and Ellis develop a friendship that turns Cole's glass-half-empty outlook on its head. There must be more to Ellis than a fun-loving jock - and maybe Cole's reawakening libido has rekindled his hope for more than camaraderie.

Okay, I did not expect how good this book was going to be. Especially after reading the sample, I hated Cole and thought it would be an aggravating read, but something pushed me to buy it. I couldn't stop wondering how Cole and Ellis were going to connect, so I bought it, kept reading, and it got so much better almost immediately after the sample. Cole improved his attitude, the story took a quick turn off the road I expected, and I began to love it.

Cole has issues, that can't be disputed. But after the first ~12% of the book, he changed from "the roommate from hell" to someone you begin to understand and root for. He has OCD (I used to as well, so I know how tough it is) and some agoraphobia in crowds/parties, but as he and Ellis fall in love, the way that Ellis comforts and supports Cole colors the way he reacts to problems (a.k.a. without having a panic attack). They fall in love practically at first sight, but it didn't bother me because they have many issues to face right off the bat, so they don't really get comfortable (or together) until much further into the book. Ellis changes a fair amount also, becoming more happy, and pouring all his sweet, sweet lovin' into Cole--not a sexual reference, although there is plenty of sex in this book too.

The secondary characters are all interesting to read about, and they provide comedic relief and some of the issues that the MCs face. We read mostly from Cole's POV, but get a few chapters from Ellis and secondary characters, which is a bit of an ingenious strategy, because that way we get background on all of those characters and get to understand their motivations and psyches. It was very fascinating and added a lot of more depth to all of them and the story overall.

On the point of all the exclamation marks that reviewers have complained of...I actually enjoyed them. Usually they bother me because this type of writing feels exaggerated and filled with misused punctuation, but in this situation, it fit exceedingly well with Cole's slightly psychotic nature. Because of the anxiety and state of mind caused by OCD, he often overreacts and exclaims, so the exclamation points just change the tone of his speeches and messages. If the author had only used periods, the tone would have been completely different and more laid back, and those descriptors aren't synonymous with Cole's personality at all. Example: "My roommate's a jock? Well, crap." That feels more like rolling eyes/exasperation. Whereas: "My roommate's a jock? Well, crap!" That's more like I'm going to freak out and want to change it right now! Which is perfectly representative of how Cole did react.

So, once I got past the beginning and Ellis's interest became clear, I very much enjoyed this read. It has humor, vivacious characters, stress, misunderstandings, self-discovery, sweet men, love, support from friends, hatred from others, quirkiness, and is unique from the others with the jock/nerd plot. It was a very pleasant surprise, and I recommend you persevere to the good parts (the last 85%) and enjoy.

My Roommate a Jock? Well Crap! (Audible Audio Edition) Wade Kelly Jason Lovett Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews

I have to say that i don't like the title, although the "well, crap!" part did make me curious enough to read the sample and then i just had to read the book. One of the main characters, namely the geek reminded me of a good friend, with his little paranoias and sarcastic remarks. The writing is good and there's a good sense of humour and the story is a sweet romance and about friendship(s) that one must learn to trust.
What i didn't like two chapters are written from minor characters' perspectives and the book might have been even better without them. *** potential spoiler *** especially the chapter from the perspective of the jock's mother; she comes across as creepy and manipulative, while later we learn that she's really not that bad. I really didn't like that chapter.
Besides the above,
it's a very good fun read.
This is the usual nerd and jock romance but the fun characters makes it enjoyable. Cole is one cute character and I do enjoy his developing relationship with Ellis as they fumble with their attraction. However I do question their first sex scene as I feel that it is so unlike Cole's personality to sort of exert himself upon Ellis. And Ellis is not really much of a jock. I like that the story alternate between Cole's narration and Ellis' viewpoint but the switches to the secondary characters is really awkward even if I do enjoy Rob's viewpoint. But that is because Rob is very likable. Rob and Russel are such great supporting charactes and the fact that these two guys are Christians makes the plot interesting. At times Rob steals the scene. The interaction among these guys is really fun. Nothing boring about this one at all and it is a fun read if you want something light and engaging.
Thank you, Wade Kelly!!! The title of this novel is SO MISLEADING. It's the only flaw of the whole thing. I thought I was diving into something that was going to be completely silly, but this is such a heartwarming coming-of-age novel "for adult readers" that I couldn't put it down! I immediately fell for Cole and Ellis--and their crazy friends--both as individuals and as romantic leads suffering from communication woes, questions of sexual identity and intimacy, and the insecurities that come from just being young. Cole is the best kind of curmudgeon, but it's really Ellis who is the heart of this story. His journey of sexual awakening as he fell in love with Cole was quirky and refreshing, with Ellis experiencing "firsts" in their relationships in ways I didn't expect. Cole is grumpy through and through, but so patient and brave about the things that matter. They are exactly who and what they other needs to be complete. I loved rooting for them, and can imagine them living a long and happy life together, with friends and family and a bounty of love for all.
What I liked best is that this story captivated from page one and I didn't stop reading until I finished the entire book. Wade Kelly takes you on a journey with these characters. I laughed out loud, I cried, I was angry, I dislike the Ellis' mom one she was introduced (she redeems herself by the end), and loved the secondary characters Rob and Russ.

I feel that the primary characters Cole and Ellis are very well developed. Both are relateable and you root for them throughout the story . I find Cole's OCD, sarcasm, and acerbic wit charming. I love that Ellis not only finds himself but embraces who he is and owns it.

This book is also very well written. I'd really have to challenge myself to locate typos or other editing errors. Actually right best the end of the book (literally last chapter and last few pages) the author eloquently states the rationale in support of LGBT rights, which in turn affirms the need to support all human rights. Just beautifully stated in my opinion and 100% mirrors my own beliefs.

With that being said, enjoy the book and experience a wonderful trip.
